Most campaign spending goes to TV ads. Do they sway anyone? Would it be better if the news media profiled candidates and their positions more and polling less? Does democracy benefit from knowing who is ahead or behind? Does that actually damage elections by reducing them to a popularity contest?

One thing that it says is that the wealthiest correctly understand that Trump is far more transactional and personalistic than Democrats. There are genuine limits to Democrats' willingness to either punish non-donors or reward donors, whereas Trump does both freely.
