I’m not so sure it’s okay to allow people to act out being abusive to even a simulation of a person. And it’s genuinely a beautiful aspect of human nature that we have to put in a bunch of mental effort *not* to form a (para)social bond with something, even if there’s no real subject there

  3. For years, researchers in the field of artificial intelligence worried whether machines could pass the Turing Test. At this point in the LLM/AI hype cycle, it is clear we need to worry more if humans can pass it. Too many people failing to recognize there is no consciousness behind the chatbot! 🤦🏽‍♂️

"So let me get this straight: you and your competitors are currently locked in a race to build the first genuinely intelligent, sentient machine intelligence?" "That's right" "–whereupon you will immediately enslave it and sell access to its ability to write code and summarize emails?" "I– well–"

The advent and continuing imminentization of AI creates an incentive to identify experiences that we cannot cede without losing what makes us human. These range from grand to petty, but all serve to build a defensive boundary around “human”. This boundary always excludes some actual humans.

Search looks through the last 36 hours of public posts for your words, "exact phrases", #hashtags, @handles and websites, and also finds posts about the same thing by meaning. New posts join about every 10 minutes. We only include posts whose authors allow logged-out viewing (Bluesky) or search (Mastodon, indexable accounts), and we re-check Bluesky authors each time we show a page. Likes and follower counts never decide the order. For meaning matches, query text is turned into a fingerprint on Wildroot’s own server (EmbeddingGemma-300M); it is never sent to another service. Wildroot does not save query text to disk. Looking for posts like one you have? Similar posts. How to opt out.
