I have used alt text for all of these reasons too! But the main reason I use alt text as a sighted person is because some of my favorite moots rely on it, and I would miss out on the chance to interact with some great people by skipping alt text.

Sighted BlueSky user here. I use alt text for adding context and jokes. It's a great place for adding gags. It's also a way to get around character limits. Shout out to @weirdguita.rs for outstanding alt text use

I always use alt text, been in the situation where images struggle to load, or the extra information helps a lot since you can only for so much detail in a post.

  4. I'm a sighted user who always uses alt text when I post, because: 1) Alt text holds 3600 characters. 2) Context. 3) It's polite to people on text-based browsers, including those who can't see. 4) I don't expect you to know who the smurf that hot actress from the 70s or 80s was, so 🔃 track 2.

I'm a sighted adult text user. My vision has been iffy for decades and is getting worse with age. Screenshots are but so created equal. I'd the original image is too small coming doesn't help. Text images are awful. If you're capping the source, copy/paste the TEXT into alt. Thank you

  6. Also mutes take alt text into account. If you mute a word and it shows up in alt text, you won't see that post. I deeply appreciate people who use alt text!

Hi, I’m a sighted alt text user! Here are some reasons I use it: - Slow Internet on an airplane - I’m over 40, I have no idea who that celebrity is - Bluesky broke images again - My vision sucks and that text is too small to read otherwise - Conveys further context and authorial intent

  10. When my artist friends/moots post comics, it makes it easier for me to see the speech/thought bubbles and get added context. When someone posts a report/memo/etc. on white paper, I can better see it on a black background due to Alt Text. Sometimes Bsky's images don't load. Buncha reasons.

-Alt-text shows up in BSKY searches. If I want to find an image using search, I can only do it if someone used alt-text. -Some people use it to credit images -I can copy and paste transcript texts if there's alt-text. Otherwise, I have to type it myself.

  12. "ALT text is just helping train the AI!" Okay but I have the ability to write alt text pretty reliably, so I'mma take that one for the team. Also how about we tell AI to take a hike instead of throwing people who need ALT text under the bus 🤔

  13. I use Bsky partially as a repository for screenshots of various political documents that I know I'll need to find again later, so I try to put alt text on them so I can search my own posts for them later

    - makes sure that things I don't want to see don't show up in my feed bc my muted and blocked terms get caught if there's alt text but don't if there's not

Search looks through the last 36 hours of public posts for your words, "exact phrases", #hashtags, @handles and websites, and also finds posts about the same thing by meaning. New posts join about every 10 minutes. We only include posts whose authors allow logged-out viewing (Bluesky) or search (Mastodon, indexable accounts), and we re-check Bluesky authors each time we show a page. Likes and follower counts never decide the order. For meaning matches, query text is turned into a fingerprint on Wildroot’s own server (EmbeddingGemma-300M); it is never sent to another service. Wildroot does not save query text to disk. Looking for posts like one you have? Similar posts. How to opt out.
