  1. I've heard folks from outside the US, esp. non-anglophones, say we're "weird about AI" (as in, *markedly* more anti-AI). If true, I think it boils down to this: a sense that the power structures in our society are not aligned to bring any good to normal folks. It's a big club and you're not in it.

AI solicits a common confession: “Maybe AI is useful in some abstract field I don’t understand or relate to but think is important…but not my field.” A lot of folks think their work—the result, not the act of doing it—matters. They’re the ones who will use these tools, luddites be damned.

  3. As @anilseth.bsky.social simply & correctly observes: “The only way to ensure safety is to not build these things in the first place.” I wrote about this in 2021, prompted by a documentary about Anthony Bourdain that employed AI to have him speak words he never said. medium.com/@nturkewitz_...

AI is a cyborg technology. The technology is us + the AI. We regulate us + cars. We regulate us + planes. We regulate us + radio transmitters. We can pass laws that make AI work for all of us.

If we are going to have AI, it should benefit all of us materially...Our data built and continues to power it...We should all get a return on that FORCED investment I am extremely AI-skeptical both because I think it could collapse our economy (bubble) and because it is dangerous in MANY ways

Search looks through the last 36 hours of public posts for your words, "exact phrases", #hashtags, @handles and websites, and also finds posts about the same thing by meaning. New posts join about every 10 minutes. We only include posts whose authors allow logged-out viewing (Bluesky) or search (Mastodon, indexable accounts), and we re-check Bluesky authors each time we show a page. Likes and follower counts never decide the order. For meaning matches, query text is turned into a fingerprint on Wildroot’s own server (EmbeddingGemma-300M); it is never sent to another service. Wildroot does not save query text to disk. Looking for posts like one you have? Similar posts. How to opt out.
