  1. I optimized Bazaar's cold startup time to 320 ms (from launch to first frame) on my laptop, so I was able to remove the short but stuttery loading screen. For comparison, GNOME Settings takes about 300 ms to load under the same conditions. Most of the savings came from running more tasks in parallel and lazy-loading some widgets. #GNOME #Bazaar

I'm gonna be honest, waiting and seeing how a new platform is gonna pan out before starting to use it can actually hurt the chances of it surviving. Sometimes you gotta jump in at the start and help it grow. Be part of it getting to where it'll be a competitor for the big dogs.

  4. There's been a bunch of discussion here recently about building a federated replacement for the recruitment and jobhunting aspects of LockedIn. There have been a couple of attempts to build something like this, and today I stumbled on another one. Development started at the end of 2020 and stalled a few months later, although the repo was only official archived and the homepage taken down in 2023; github.com/Flockingbird ( 1/2) #FlockingBird #LinkedIn #ProfessionalNetworking #FediDevs

current idea: personal bookmark tool that archives the website at the time of you visiting it, lets you do basic highlighting, and is attached to an actually competent search engine for you to look through them later

Search looks through the last 36 hours of public posts for your words, "exact phrases", #hashtags, @handles and websites, and also finds posts about the same thing by meaning. New posts join about every 10 minutes. We only include posts whose authors allow logged-out viewing (Bluesky) or search (Mastodon, indexable accounts), and we re-check Bluesky authors each time we show a page. Likes and follower counts never decide the order. For meaning matches, query text is turned into a fingerprint on Wildroot’s own server (EmbeddingGemma-300M); it is never sent to another service. Wildroot does not save query text to disk. Looking for posts like one you have? Similar posts. How to opt out.
