Oh sweet, new autocycler version dropped. General performance improvement and unaligned BAM support for processing basecalled output directly (though I feel like regular users would still want a filtered fastq for their assemblies). github.com/rrwick/Autoc...

  3. I wonder who at Apple has skipped image processing 101. The way the scale avatars (right) in System Settings, what is it? Nearest neighbor? Left is Slack at similar size. But essentially just normal scaling

It looks like our content processing silently fell over in the back ground, one of the nodes went down around 8:30am and the other about 2 hours ago. I've just given everything a kick and feeds should start getting re-populated and everything should start to catch up. Apologies folks on #MastodonAppUK for the blip there.

Google's reverse image search had already been going downhill for some time, but now it's functionally useless. If the image of what you're looking for is deemed in violation of "content guidelines", it just refuses to process the search at all now.

I was debugging a slow router & asked Claudio and it's casually like, "oh, that's just a bug in Linux: they wrote = instead of |= in one of the cases, let's work around it..." And I'm like, "whoa, that's trashy. Can't we upstream a fix?" It's like: "yeah, sure" Now I have to learn that process 😅

Having USB-C be the multi-function port that does everything including charging your laptop is great until the complicated handshake process required breaks and now you have no way to charge your laptop

We take for granted just how much is handled by phones now. Recently, I flew, I went to a concert, I spent a couple of nights in a hotel, and I went to a theme park twice. In all cases, I could enter with an app. 15 years ago, those would all be their own card or ticket to keep track of.

Me: looking up a specific Biblical quote. Site: "Personal data may be processed to do the following: use precise geolocation data and identify devices based on information actively requested." ...wow, some of those verses were way ahead of their time. 👀

as much as servfail web makes configuring my domains simple and easy et cetera i really have to say the idea of opening a website to manage my domains being a necessary step of the process increasingly feels like a trick

After many years, finally got the Roslyn (C#/VB) formatting plugin for dprint (dprint.dev) compiled to Wasm so it runs sandboxed instead of launching an executable. Amazing how far C# has come.

Hold the phone, Mabel, I can still just write standard SQL queries to get at/process data in FileMaker?! 🤯 This is much faster than the scripting gymnastics that would otherwise be required in instances where I want a filtered result set and is my new favorite thing.

  14. There should be some process of appeal or arbitration about the block function. I saw a post today where the comments didn't match the number. I used a different account and saw it was somebody who blocked me. I would love to know why. I know I've accidentally/unfairly/too quickly blocked people.

Just helped my sister claim her business on Apple Maps. Holy hell, what a hostile process that is. We had to upload the logo five times because every time it added a requirement. Maps: Upload logo! *uploads logo* Oh yeah, we forgot to mention: it has to be square. *uploads square logo* Oh yeah, this won't do, it has to be at least 1024*1024px. *uploads bigger svg* Your svg can't contain [list of valid svg elements]! #Scraping websites and #bot-protection While searching for my ancestors, I had to access data from many different websites. I noticed there were different levels of protection against automated access depending on the site. In this post, I’ll list them and mention countermeasures you can take to bypass them anyway. blog.frankel.ch/bypass-bot-pro…

Search looks through the last 36 hours of public posts for your words, "exact phrases", #hashtags, @handles and websites, and also finds posts about the same thing by meaning. New posts join about every 10 minutes. We only include posts whose authors allow logged-out viewing (Bluesky) or search (Mastodon, indexable accounts), and we re-check Bluesky authors each time we show a page. Likes and follower counts never decide the order. For meaning matches, query text is turned into a fingerprint on Wildroot’s own server (EmbeddingGemma-300M); it is never sent to another service. Wildroot does not save query text to disk. Looking for posts like one you have? Similar posts. How to opt out.
