I am going to share a bit about a rabbit hole I went down recently. I was curious what the deal was with GNU nano. Why is it always there? Why does it feel so weird? Who could possibly care about it given its bindings don’t feel native on GNU like #Emacs nor does it rely on the ubiquity (and supposed compositional grammar) of vi? So here is the thing, there was once an email client called Pine. (Kids, ask your parents.) And Pine had a beloved email composition system called Pico (Pine composer), which was also available as its own editor. And its philosophy was geared for beginners. Think mo

Retrospective of the last months of personal software #UIdesign - I keep deleting the left sidebars. First it was left sidebar navigation- replaced by an in-tab homescreen (and a go to home button). Now I’m deleting the left sidebar "major modes"/"new tab of tool X" too and replacing it with a modal

  6. Just within the first few weeks of being on Bluesky again (ya know, gently getting my toes wet again), it's wild to me just how much even their simple algorithm messes with my head. I am very thankful for Mastadon, and suspect that even as I begin to grow in things and show more of my hobbies […]

While doing this Forgejo setup, I was checking HackerNews for any interesting relevant discussions. It popped up this blog post, to replace email notifications with XMPP -- for Forgejo, but actually the solution works for any other server that talks SMTP (email delivery). The vibes of the blog - and the rest of the site - really resonates :) Plenty to explore and get some inspiration from someone making a lot of "silly little projects" :) マリウス.com/teaching-an-old-dog-n…

A very niche thing I never thought I'd bother with in my life: Disabling random messages / friend requests on Discord. Like, I enjoy meeting new people and what have you. But bots, scammers, strangers? Not ideal. It's called a "friends list" And it's one I need to clean at some point tbh.

Search looks through the last 36 hours of public posts for your words, "exact phrases", #hashtags, @handles and websites, and also finds posts about the same thing by meaning. New posts join about every 10 minutes. We only include posts whose authors allow logged-out viewing (Bluesky) or search (Mastodon, indexable accounts), and we re-check Bluesky authors each time we show a page. Likes and follower counts never decide the order. For meaning matches, query text is turned into a fingerprint on Wildroot’s own server (EmbeddingGemma-300M); it is never sent to another service. Wildroot does not save query text to disk. Looking for posts like one you have? Similar posts. How to opt out.
