⚙️ Be careful, a focus on efficiency can make systems worse. We save a few dollars, but slow down the whole system. "Do more with less" reduces quality and eventually costs more. When everything is about efficiency, the focus is primarily on the cost of the work. Missing from the equation: are we doing the right job? Is the work being done well? Efficiency creates systems that are fragile, with many handoffs that are slower at delivering results. Over years of making mistakes, I've learned what does work: - Define what results matter and have clear priorities. Most groups can sustain only th

i think we actually have a lot of pretty good ideas about what consciousness is and how it develops, AI people interested in the question just don’t read and need to feel like they’re at the forefront of *every* social question instead of just one set of technical puzzles

  7. Three thoughts: 1. If they truly believed that they have created conscious beings, they should be arrested for enslavement and trafficking. 2. Why think that human morality, very much grounded in bodies, would make sense to conscious AI? 3. Morality is not designed to keep monsters in check.

  8. As @anilseth.bsky.social simply & correctly observes: “The only way to ensure safety is to not build these things in the first place.” I wrote about this in 2021, prompted by a documentary about Anthony Bourdain that employed AI to have him speak words he never said. medium.com/@nturkewitz_...

Little not-very-secret thing I learned from my time designing servers: Efficiency is performance. Huge ramifications, but not really a secret, because this is exactly why things like AWS Graviton exist. And yet, it still seems to be a really alien, contrarian thing to say, in this field. Especially in today's "AI" craze, which goes 100% against this. So, let's say you improve your service's performance by 10% with a neat trick. But it increases power by 20%. This made your service *SLOWER*.

  13. Been having lots of convos with a colleague who is a hardcore coder. Upshot is that it is hard to use AI well without creating more problems than it is worth. My two cents is that the industry could never survive on the basis of people using it carefully.

Search looks through the last 36 hours of public posts for your words, "exact phrases", #hashtags, @handles and websites, and also finds posts about the same thing by meaning. New posts join about every 10 minutes. We only include posts whose authors allow logged-out viewing (Bluesky) or search (Mastodon, indexable accounts), and we re-check Bluesky authors each time we show a page. Likes and follower counts never decide the order. For meaning matches, query text is turned into a fingerprint on Wildroot’s own server (EmbeddingGemma-300M); it is never sent to another service. Wildroot does not save query text to disk. Looking for posts like one you have? Similar posts. How to opt out.
