Mentions the incident during the Apollo 11 landing when Buzz Aldrin flipped a switch, that caused a CPU overload. The software survived because Hamilton had anticipated and simulated such a scenario and had added logic to prioritize essential tasks over others.

Paul Curto, who nominated Hamilton for a NASA Space Act Award, called Hamilton's work "the foundation for ultra-reliable software design."

Try uploading your passport.

So I tried Gander.

Before you’re allowed to post, you need to verify your humanity. You can do that through an organization you’re associated with, such as your place of employment.

Not part of an organization that can verify you? Then you’re directed to Canada Post’s Identity+ app, which requires proof of aliveness and uploading your Canadian passport.

And as we’ve all learned from the Fediverse, friction prevents community growth.

If you’re not familiar with Gander, it’s a made-in-Canada social network aimed at Canadians, in part as an alternative to American-dominated social media.

It’s based on AT Protocol, and apparently you can view content from Bluesky.

But beyond the verification hurdle, the app clearly isn’t ready for prime time. There are numerous obvious bugs. For example, while I was composing a post, it lost my cursor and wouldn’t scroll downward as I kept writing.

I also think that if Gander is going to survive, it needs to integrate with the Canadian Fediverse. There’s already an established community here.

Gander doesn’t have one yet.

"In simpler terms, the coffee maker was generating so much traffic that it overwhelmed…

"In simpler terms, the coffee maker was generating so much traffic that it overwhelmed part of the home Wi-Fi setup."

Back then, earning user confidence was necessary to sell the product.

And, in the world of dial-up, most people had multiple vendors to choose from.

Nowadays, because of regulatory capture, one maybe has one or two broadband vendors available, and they (usually) all suck because always-on internet is a necessary utility for a middle-class household.

So, it's all rent-seeking and cutting costs, which often means intentionally sacrificing quality.

Another NERD patent.

Another NERD patent. Vicarian is a batteries-included reverse-proxy aimed mostly at self-hosting. It has built-in ACME/LetsEncrypt support, including DNS-based certificate generation.

Since I last mentioned Vicarian on here there have a been a lot of bug-fixes and a few notable features:

* The configuration language has been changed from Corn to HCL. See vicarian-full.hcl for a full documented example. Environment injection now is fully supported, including integers (e.g. port numbers). ACME/Letsencrypt configuration blocks are reusable across vhosts.
* Speaking of port numbers these can now be overridden on the command-line.
* ACME/Letsencrypt wildcard certificates are now supported.
* Serving static files is now supported natively.
* Native Prometheus stats are now supported, including ACME time-to-renewal counters.
* Listening on an interface rather than an IP is now supported.
* Debian packages are now provided; see the README for details.
* Many bug fixes and protocol handling improvements. Test coverage has been
 greatly expanded.

To recap its key features:

* Native support for ACME/Letsencrypt, including DNS-based challenges (DNS-01 is supported, DNS-PERSIST-01 to be added once support is more widely available).
* Automatic certificate reloading for externally generated certificates.
* Do The Right Thing by default; if a particular header or setting was usually required by, say, nginx then it should be the default. e.g. X-Forwarded-For and HSTS.

With this release I'm confident enough to declare Vicarian as pre-1.0 beta status; it is feature-complete for my own use-cases, although some features may be added along the way. Possible future features may include:

* DNS-PERSIST-01, DEVICE-ATTEST-01, and TLS-ALPN-01 support.
* Additional credential sources (e.g. Vault/OpenBao, TPM2/systemd-creds).

Vicarian (and this announcement) was written by a human (me, Steve). The Vicarian project has a no-AI-in-production-code rule. I wrote this to scratch my own itch, but hopefully it may be of use to others.

Env vars, PATH additions, and the virtualenv all live in one .envrc in the repo, so there is no "did I activate the right venv?" and no settings leaking from one project into the next. It works with many different shells, different languages, different project shapes, and you can customize it as needed. It is a tremendously useful tool. Strong recommendation from me.

A one-time `direnv allow` is the trust step, and direnv asks again whenever the .envrc changes.

It's a shame it's not widely adopted. In a world full of reverse proxies and complex distributed systems, this kind of visibility can be crucial. I can think of a couple of use cases for this at work.

TIL every re-save of a JPEG is a lossy event, so careless stacking makes photos visibly softer. When you need to merge JPEG files into one comparison sheet, route around the recompression instead of crossing your fingers. Zoom in and the difference is real.

This is clickbaity and piss-poor reporting.

This is clickbaity and piss-poor reporting. Discord didn't get hacked. Some random third-party bot got hacked.

Discord have certainly had privacy woes but this is nothing to do with them, beyond the bot being used on Discord

A little lull in my day job while waiting for corporate approvals.

A little lull in my day job while waiting for corporate approvals. I wrote two small command line apps in Rust for my own use.

First one loads all local git branches and let's me select one to check out, also has text filtering.

Second one shows all git branches with a multi select. I can delete local branches easily en masse. Stale branches are marked as such.

I learned that programs prefixed with `git-` can be run through git like an alias without configuring anything special.

When I came to the geek trade in 1980, there were *lots* of women. The first two hardcore systems programmers I ever met were women.

I didn't need Hamilton to look up to, I already had two serious geek women to learn from.

That changed. There are many fewer women in the trade today than there were back then.

I bought an OPNsense router back in 2023 when I had my own internet, and it was easy to…

I bought an OPNsense router back in 2023 when I had my own internet, and it was easy to setup because my ISP modem at the time (AT&T) didn't have restrictive or abstracted settings for configuring a secondary router in passthrough mode. When I moved back in with my parents, my ISP made it extremely difficult to use anything but their own equipment, so I just let the OPNsense router sit unused in a cabinet.

I recently cancelled my Comcast Xfinity internet service and am now using my parents', which is in the same house but just on their own network. I've been thinking about ways to keep my network devices logically separated from my parents' and other family members' devices, and I stumbled upon an article on how to do that with my OPNsense router without putting my parents' modem/router in bridge mode.

It's always a win when I can use technology I paid good money for but for whatever reason haven't been using.
