I read "The Shining" last Halloween and while I enjoyed it I certainly felt like it outstayed it's welcome.

"Carrie" on the other hand is a much shorter and pacier read with a great sense of momentum and building pressure. I've never seen any of the film adaptations but might have to check one out.

Some of the language is certainly dated and problematic, casual racism and a few instances where Mr. King is guilty of writing female characters "titting down the stairs", but given how generally awesome he's been during America's descent into fascism I'm happy to file those instances of questionable writing down to novel being over 50 years old. "Different times" rather than problematic opinions.

Will probably also read Misery this season, but might switch to another author in between.

7) Narrative Voice I'll share a snip from my short story collection (that one that…

7) Narrative Voice

a number of conversations were ultimately incorporated into a chapter about Tina in Gabriel’s The Fight of Our Lives: AIDS in America, written with YA author David Levithan. they wanted this book to be a way to tell the story of AIDS for young people, and it is fantastic. there is one chapter that tells the story of loss through 18 obituaries from SF’s Bay Area Reporter, all from a single month (January 1990). that was a time when most newspapers would not print the word AIDS in an obit.

The Fight of Our Lives made the long list for the National Book Award’s Young People’s Literature, and just today it was announced as one of the five finalists for that award.

Satantango by 2025 Nobel Literature Prize winner László Krasznahorkai (which I read…

Satantango by 2025 Nobel Literature Prize winner László Krasznahorkai (which I read last year) features spiders, spider webs, ghostly bells, collective dreaming, also continuous rain, lust, drunkenness and despair. “So amazingly bleak that it’s often quite funny,” said the Guardian.

My first academic journal article came out in Anarchist Studies four years ago.

My first academic journal article came out in Anarchist Studies four years ago. It has long since been posted on the Anarchist Library where you can read it for free: "From the Ashes of the Old: Anarchism Reborn in a Counterrevolutionary Age (1970s-1990s)" theanarchistlibrary.org/librar…

Abstract:

After almost a century of Marxist predominance, how did anarchism develop from a marginal phenomenon into a force at the centre of the anti-globalisation movement? This article explores how anarchism was reborn in a counterrevolutionary age. Part one investigates how the New Right’s post-1960s counterrevolution defeated the New Left and remade US society, including by recuperating potentially liberatory elements of social movements. Part two examines how a new generation of radicals critiqued the failures of Marxism-Leninism and popularised the anarchist analysis and principles that provided the foundation for the anti-globalisation movement. The article discusses five examples of the development of anarchist theory and practice: Black/New Afrikan Anarchism, anarcha-feminism, eco-anarchism, punk anarchism, and revolutionary social anarchism. Ultimately, the article argues that anarchism was revitalised in the late twentieth century because it provided compelling answers to the new problems posed by the neoliberal counterrevolution and the crisis of state socialism.

Just finished 'The Ruby in the Smoke' by Philip Pullman.

Just finished 'The Ruby in the Smoke' by Philip Pullman.

This is an enjoyable YA novel with a plucky young heroine in Victorian London, who finds herself enmeshed in a murder-filled mystery connected to the opium trade.

Apparently the first novel in a series, I'll have to hunt the others down.

The cover was amazing. Apparently Le Major's face here is based on Clint Eastwood. I held it in my hands and was a bit shocked about how thick it was. There had to be double or three times the amount of drawings in here than in the other ones. I felt intensely blessed at that moment. You see these books were essentially made of pure magic to me. I just lay there holding it for a while....without even opening it. I was stunned, just by the weight of the book.

I could never understand the story of this one, it didn't made sense to me. It had been made a few pages at a time, Moebius would just evolve the story for each new issue from where he left off. It ended up being a bit incoherent and so on. It's fine I'm telling you...it's totally fine...once you see the drawings.

I really enjoyed it! It's a great look at the conspiracy-brained history of this country.

Having just finished a re-read of The Lord of the Rings, I'm struck by the realisation…

Having just finished a re-read of The Lord of the Rings, I'm struck by the realisation that the most important factors in the success of Frodo in his quest to destroy the ring were, in order of importance
1) Lembas
2) Gollum
3) Orcish squabbling
...
99) Sam
100) Frodo

During the 1986 Pacific Northwest timber strike, Aberdeen mill workers marched over 100 miles to save their communities from corporate concessions. Much like the Luddites, they targeted bosses who weaponized automation to devalue labor rather than technology itself. By exposing how companies like Weverhaeuser blamed global competition to mask profit-driven layoffs, the movement proved that economic fate is a corporate choice rather than an inevitability.

Can somewhere be loved to death?

Can somewhere be loved to death? My new novel ‘Bridge of Sighs’ is a fast-paced contemporary murder mystery set in Edinburgh and northern Scotland.

Balnakeil Bay, in north-west Sutherland, offers a superb beach leading to Faraid head, seen in the distance. It plays a background role in the story.

The serious subtext and research behind the humor.

"The Wine and Cheese Pirates" is a romp, but it also explains the economics of grey markets in the presence of unreasonable tariffs.

There are unintended consequences when one chooses to implement economics that went out of favor in the 1800s with good reason.

If one irrationally sets tariffs too high it creates an incentive for smuggling otherwise legal goods to profit on the arbitrary profit margin created by the tariff.

I would be astounded if this isn't going on all over the world right now. The inherent danger is that once the grey market logistics are in place it becomes easy to use off the books supply chains to ship black market goods, as well. That too is probably happening right now.

In "The Adventures of [Unfortunate Panda-Face] Wilson in the First Dimension**" I look into the differences between logographic symbolic languages and alphabetic languages using Emojuese, a language consisting of symbols with culturally agreed upon idiomatic meanings, Emojis, and Angstlish as it was spoken before the advent of the cerebral cortex InnerNet allowing people to communicate directly in most cases without text or vocal intermediation.

This of course results in a pidgin language that attempts to combine both languages in ways that often impeded communication.

The difference in the level of terror associated with Emojuese:🗡️ 🥷 ❔[Dagger][Ninja][Question Mark] and the alphabetic Angstlish: "Nobody Knows, Inc., LLC of the Isle of Man" is orders of magnitude greater for Emojuese users in part because rather than being spoken or written the symbols just appear inside their heads.

There is a lot of comparative linguistics going on in the background that has little to do with the plot, but is there just because I find it interesting.

The clown car has a lot of very sophisticated moving parts under the hood in most of my writing.

Book 73: Villain.

Book 73: Villain. Picking up where Hench left off, sort of a "What kind of person becomes a villain, and what motivates them to do evil things?" novel where the protagonist is the hench person to a villain named Leviathan who is partially insectoid. Things get complicated when he defeats his rival (in the last book) and loses a sense of purpose. Then they get somewhat involved. Then they fight the good guys. Not as good as the original (to relationship-angst for my tastes) but clever and fun.
